My first impression was positive because reception staff were very friendly and the room seemed clean, modern and well laid out. However, overtime I learned otherwise. There were numerous lights but they were all very dim and it was impossible to make the room bright even when they were all turned on. The well placed lights hanging over the suitcase area and in the wardrobe was too dim to serve their intended purpose, and an oddly placed hanging light in the bathroom flickered (presumably due to an electrical fault) and was too dim to be useful anyway. Oddly, there were no on/off switches for any of those lights. Other lights in the bathroom sufficed, but a brighter light option would be a significant improvement. There was no light in the entry way which contained the only full length mirror for dressing. The large window had both sheer and block out blinds, which was important for privacy because there was a direct view into other rooms. However, access to outside light was limited, even during the day, because there was no privacy without the sheer blinds, and the window faced a large concrete yard (not a carpark, just un-utilised space within the hotel's property line) with a few (mostly dead) plants. The result was a depressing view and low light (even when none of the blinds were used). The location is very convenient to Southern Cross station - making access to public transport across the city and commuting to and from the airport via the skybus extremely easy.
The hotel is relatively new so there was no build up of grim, but I was dissapointed to find an extremely old orange and a plastic takeaway container of rotten food under the lounge. This indicates the room was not properly cleaned when previous occupants left (probably several given the state of decay of the produce left) or when they made up my room. I stayed 4 nights so cleaning should have occured during that time. Mini bar prices were indicated but the bar fridge was not stocked other than provision of milk and room service hours were short, inconsistent and not advised in the hotel directory. When I googled, it appeared service was meant to be 24h, but on all occasions the room service app stopped working before 10 pm. It did not advise room service was closed, but instead displayed a vague error message (so I wasted time trying again at different times), and my calls to reception and room service were ignored (I called numerous times prior to and after 10 pm and on different days) even when the reception desk remained staffed (which I noticed because I had to redress to shop for a food and beverages. It would make sense to stock the mini bar if room service closes early. At check-out, I was asked to indicate which mini bar items I used despite none being stocked. Given the produce I found under the couch, I am no longer sure if the milk left in the minibar was provided by the hotel or left by previous guests, especially given there were two different brands of the same product. I found this quite creepy when I realised, but was relieved they were at least unopened and within date.
