Lovely hotel, wonderful onsen, great staff, excellent food, well located.
We enjoyed most things about the property, service, location, quality and variety of meals. I believe we were asked to dine at Aoi because of our room type, but were slightly shocked to see that some of the other guests were told to have their meals in a large canteen-style hall.
Main quibble was the pillows (maybe offer two different types of pillows for different sleeping styles). Would also be good if there is a (free) coffee machine offering different types of coffee, which is what we enjoyed at our next hotel in Fuefuki.

Hidden Gem in a small busy town in the mountain.
Success of a business is as good as the staff and commitments they bring to work, and this experience we had in a short stay. Even though it seemed like they were short staffed, the welcome counter, the happy hour, the sundry store, and front desk were covered with patient and attentive staff. Our first time here was exceptional, and we'd definitely be back one day.
Extend our sincere gratitude to the staff and keep them happy, for they are your success in your business, particularly to N, originally not from Japan, that helped us understand the meals she served us.
Wheelchair access for several of the on-property restaurants were a concern, however, we're sure one day this will be addressed by management.

Not for vegetarians, bring ear plugs
The location was good , the staff were friendly and helpful
We booked the Property on the basis that there would be a vegetarian meal offered as per the details on Booking.com
However, when we contacted the Property to confirm this, we were told that they could accommodate a certain number of food, allergies, but they would not provide a vegetarian menu
This was somewhat of a surprise as we had stayed at a much smaller ryokan near Nagano and for a small extra cost, they had been very accommodating
Neither were we given the option to go ahead with the booking on the basis of the room only
Because we liked the look of the hotel, and because we were keen on the area, we went ahead with the booking, and I was hoping that I would be able to have rice, vegetables and some tofu but the vast majority of the dishes were meat , raw fish and seafood . Unfortunately my allergies were lost in translation, I am allergic to all seafood , but this was translated into shrimp and crab and two of the soups were served with mussels and sea urchins
My husband however loved all the dishes which was just as well as he ate mine as well !
The rooms did have a slight musty smell to them and neither of use were that sure how clean the duvets were either
The worst part of the stay was the general building’s air conditioning which was so loud it even permeated my ear plugs, we both had very little sleep
Would I stay again .. no but the management should be really proud of their staff they were all delightful

I would come back again. Great weekend away from Tokyo.
The hotel is massive with lots of different amenities. The onsen is very nice though nothing exceptional.
The building is in very good shape and some parts of it feel like they were recently renovated and redesigned.
The food was par for the course for a ryokan of this price and size, which is to say very nice. Some interesting and unique flavours stood out like the grilled slightly charred corn, and the fried dishes on the second night that included popped rice on the stalk. Very interesting and unusual.
The service during dinner on Saturday though was very slow. Seems like the kitchen was overwhelmed or something. Dinner took 2 hours from start to finish which is not normal in my experience having been to many ryokan over the years living in Japan. It’s a shame because the staff was lovely and the hotel facilities were great.
