It's ideal if you're after an authentic experience of staying in a Japanese ryokan, eating Japanese food, bathing in an onsen, and being in the beautiful mountains away from the noise and pollution.
It's not upmarket, nor is it old and tired.
If you're after a modern western hotel, serving western food, speaking fluent English, close to shops and restaurants, then this isn't for you.
The staff speak some English, which is enough for basic communication.
The quality and quantity of food is excellent.
It is only 10 minutes walk to transport.

Stuff was great, the onsen was ok, when there are not a lot of people using it. Dinner was also nice.

The staff were amazing and always accommodating. The location is exceptional, essentially at the gate of the Hakone ropeway, and the morning shuttle to Gora station made it even easier to get a head start first thing in the morning to beat the tourist rush. From Gora station you can access the ropeway gondola to the sightseeing ship across Lake Ashi and take a hike on Old Tokaido road to the ancient tea house for Amazake. The hotel itself is very comfortable although the decor is a little dated, but the Onsen amenities were very pleasant. A nice lounge by the restaurant to relax outside of your room, even a ping pong room and games to keep you entertained on a rainy day. The Kaiseki meals were impressive and satisfying. It was a cool experience to be up in the mountains, and the view from our suite was pretty majestic. A great way to spend 1-2 nights. If you like hiking, Mt. Kintoki is one bus ride away from Gora station, which on a clear day will give a beautiful viewpoint for Mt. Fuji.
The ensuite bathroom was quite small but we were naturally inclined to use the Onsen shower anyways.

Close to rope line and gondola. Friendliness of staff.
Unfortunately not a fan of Japanese food provided. The foods presentation was lovely and I’m sure it was enjoyed by others. I wish western food was provided as an alternative as the food was part of the price included in the room and we ended buying food elsewhere as we were unable to eat it.
