This is a jungle experience! You’re surrounded by beautiful trees and vegetation… exotic animals and their unique sounds… as well as a beautiful beach with 2 pools and a swim-up bar!
The staff is friendly and genuinely happy to see and accommodate you. The swim-up bartender, Antonio, is a true professional… quick to make your drink, fun, and entertaining! The restaurants were beautiful and clean, and the food was quite good.
The property, itself, was extremely well-maintained and clean, and equipped with all the amenities you could want. We actually planned to be in town for a good portion of the trip, but my family and I didn’t want to leave the resort! It was such a relaxing vibe, great for families and couples… a great mix of both.
Thank you to everyone at The Reef Playacar for such a beautiful and memorable family vacation. We would DEFINITELY go back!

The Reef is an eco hotel which means to me less luxury than others because they are trying to use more sustainable practices- and while I appreciate that, there is a trade off. The staff was friendly, but they are very pushy about the vacation club presentation. While the hotel was overall clean they did not change the sheets while we were there- a week long stay. The mattresses are EXTREMELY firm and the pillows thin so lack support, very uncomfortable in our opinion. Also the walls/floors lack sound proofing and we could hear other guests at all times- and they were not being excessively loud. The food was not good, we tried the buffet (which buffets are never great anywhere in my opinion), and both the Mexican and Italian restaurants and all were for lack of a better or more eloquent word, gross. We ate most several times at the snack shack which was ok and used Uber Eats to have local food delivered- which was a big unexpected expense for what I thought would be all-inclusive. The pools are nice though they got pretty dirty later in the day… which partly is normal with nature all around. The beach is great, the Sargassum only kept us out of the ocean 2 of the 6 days we were there, they really try to keep it as under control as possible. The animals and plants on the property were a highlight! Overall we managed to make the best of our trip, but I’ll be looking for different accommodations next time I visit Mexico.
