Onsen was nice but not worth the nearly $1000 price tag
Staff were generally lovely and respectful. The private onsen on the balcony was nice. The beds are super comfortable and the room was a decent size. I didn’t understand the point of the table with chairs in the room since we weren’t dining in the room! It could have been better with a seating area.
Given the location of the hotel (tucked away in a forested area), the shuttle service to the station was helpful. Without it, I don’t think I would have stayed here. It is all uphill from the station. FYI while we didn’t use it, there is a 7-11 at the end of the winding street leading to hotel.
We did the half board and while we enjoyed the experience of a traditional kaiseki dinner and Japanese breakfast, not sure Japanese breakfast was for us! Be ready for a lot of fish in the morning. Loved that we went to dinner in our provided PJs and slippers.
For the amount of money we paid for the night (close to $1000), we would have expected a lot more from this property and the room. While it was very traditional, the rooms were SUPER tired and looked like they came out of the 70s. The property felt a bit tired and for this kind of money we would have expected a little more of a luxurious experience.
The toilet being by the door and the rest of the bathroom being on the other side of room was a bit awkward.
When we checked in we had to choose our dining time and the type of meal we wanted…we arrived early for check in and even then we were told that hot pot dinner was sold out. Not sure why they don’t just ask us our preference at the time of reservation.??

Great room with private onsen, mediocre dinner (grill option) for the room price, and generally unhelpful staff
Peaceful and beautiful.
The room we were assigned with a private onsen bath had a view of a parking lot, so we didn’t feel guaranteed privacy with the window shade open. However, if we closed the window shade, then we would lose our beautiful view. Also, we were told when calling to confirm our room, that we could choose the dinner time when we checked in. Well we checked in right at 3:00PM and were just assigned a dining time by the staff. When we inquired the later dining time, they said it wasn’t available. Only after asking multiple times if there was ANY option available for the later dining time, did they offer that if we switched our dinner type that they could accommodate us. Felt weird that they didn’t want to offer this upfront, knowing we didn’t want to eat early. Dinner was mediocre - we got the grill option, and the seafood was all pre-cooked, making it extra dry by the time we were able to grill it to heat it back up. Additionally, our server rushed us through our dinner courses, so we felt we had to quickly eat so that she could place the next courses down that she had already brought without checking that we were ready. Not a very satisfying dinner experience. I am glad I stayed but will not be recommending this place to others.

A wonderful Hakone getaway
The staff was nice, the food was amazing (we had breakfast and dinner), and the onsens were very comfortable. They had many nice amenities for people staying there (combs, soaps, etc), including candied sweet potatoes at specific hours and ramen at night (plus ice cream and milk after the onsen). Many of the staff spoke enough English to help non-japanese speakers and were generally kind.
They were unable to request or reserve a taxi, so I used TaxiGo instead. Not a major issue, just surprising.

Memorable stay and dinner and a highlight of our Japan trip
We stayed at the Mizunoto for just one night but it was such a lovely stay. The room was very comfortable and well equipped and our private onsen bath on the balcony was lovely. The dinner was absolutely fabulous and despite not getting our first choice of menu, we were not disappointed. There was so much food and it was all delicious. This was the same at breakfast the following day when we were presented with so much to eat and all beautifully prepared. The girl who we dealt with in the front desk was a really delight. Being able to take the shuttle bus from the station was a bonus. It was definitely one of the highlights of our Japan trip.
Information in the room said that no alcohol was served but this was misleading as you could order drinks at dinner.
