A nicely positioned resort, a quick drive from Anchorage, with a good spa adjoining (didn't visit this time but have been before). Renovated bedroom was a bit better than before. Free shuttle bus to the village is great. Staff were friendly but didn't go above and beyond. The new lobby bar makes good use of the space.
Standard king room mattress was a bit hard and springy. Room was small, bathroom even smaller. Shoulder season has so many amenities closed you would hope the hotel would put on a few extra touches to make up for it (ie free lobby cocoa or smores kits, free welcome drink, free valet, discounted Nordic spa access, that sort of thing), or at least discount the rooms accordingly. In room amenities were very mediocre - had to ask for (worn out, thin) robes to be delivered, no slippers to get to the pool, cheap toiletries, coffee supplies are basic motel-like ones. The indoor pool is showing its age and was full of rowdy kids/teenagers. The coffee shop is very uninspiring with mediocre coffee. Since opening the Nordic Spa the hotel has reduced its spa services (no more facials, nail services or body treatments). Loud competing music in public areas. Have stayed numerous times over the past 10 years and hoped for more from the recent refurbish. Considered trying out the Black Diamond Club but found it expensive for the offering (compared with Fairmont Gold).
