dark and humid room, poor cleanliness
The location was the only genuinely positive aspect of the property. It is very close to Ondarreta Beach, in a pleasant and well-connected area of San Sebastián, with public transport, shops and restaurants within easy reach. This made it convenient for visiting the city and reaching the seafront.
Unfortunately, the actual living conditions made the stay extremely uncomfortable.
The room was very dark, with almost no natural light, and felt persistently humid. Its only significant opening faced a small enclosed lightwell rather than an open exterior space. To ventilate the room and make it bearable, I had to keep the door/window completely open onto this lightwell, which was dirty and contained refuse. This gave me very little privacy and did not provide proper fresh-air ventilation.
I knew from the listing that the bathroom was shared, so that was not the issue. The problem was its condition: I found visible dirt, hair and residue, and the shower had a drainage problem that caused water to accumulate. The owner later acknowledged that the drain needed to be checked and subsequently said that it had been fixed. The shared areas also appeared cluttered and poorly maintained, with dirty cleaning equipment and full refuse bins. The Wi-Fi did not work properly during my stay.
The conditions made it extremely difficult to rest, particularly because I was already unwell. I contacted several hotels because I seriously considered leaving before the end of the reservation.
The owner’s response when I raised these problems made the situation considerably worse. His manner was confrontational and dismissive rather than helpful. His messages included comments to the effect that “this is not a hotel” and that whoever made something dirty should clean it. As a guest travelling alone and still staying inside his home, I felt intimidated and deeply uncomfortable continuing the discussion directly with him.
I reported the problems to Booking.com during the stay and provided photographic evidence. This was not a minor inconvenience or a question of personal taste: the combination of humidity, extremely limited light, poor cleanliness, inadequate ventilation, maintenance problems and the owner’s attitude negatively affected the entire stay.
