Filthy property run by an inhospitable Guest. Don't be deceived by the photos. Book at your own risk

The only positive attribute about the property is location.

I booked for 5 nights but only stayed one night after cancelling the booking. Firstly the Host is in accessible via the listed phone number and can only be contacted via the Booking.com messaging platform. Apparently, the property had been closed for an unknown but extended period due to a "Security risk", something I only learnt from the Host when I complained of discomfort. I observed that the property had had a major roof leak and rain had damaged and soiled the ceiling and wooden doors. When the property was re-opened for guests, shower cubicles had developed molds, linen accumulated dust and a foul smell that develops during extended periods of no ventilation. The couches that look immaculate on the property advert on the Booking.com App had visible dust and dirt marks. I could not reach the Host via the listed number on the day of checked in and could only reach the host the following day. I requested for a clean up of the place but was advised that there would be a charge of R500 for the service and furthermore, that service would only be available after spending two nights at the property. I protested and refused to pay for a service that was already included in the rate I had paid. After an exchange of messages via the Booking.Com App, the Host grudgingly agreed to only send a Cleaner the following day but the Cleaner would only dust up the property without deep cleaning and washing of curtains and Linen. I declined the offer and advised the Host that I was cancelling the booking as I was not prepared to spend another night in a filthy apartment. I advised Booking.com of my ordeal via the messaging platform and followed up with a telephone call to Booking.Com Johannesburg Customer Care, cancelled the booking and checked out. I requested for a reimbursement and the Host initially declined but reached out later with an offer for a full refund subject to me giving a 10/10 rating of the property and I have declined misleading potential Guests.

Self-catering. The location was close to where I wanted to be. Shops are all within 10 minutes walking distance. There is a large open-air park a few blocks away to exercise in.

The whole process of booking online was so impersonal. I was never sure if I was dealing with a genuine site or if I was being scammed. No one answered or returned any of my calls. Before arriving I tried to message my host on Whatsapp only to be told by whoever I was dealing with that they could not find my email. I then copied my email onto Whatsapp. I was then told I would receive an email two days before arrival. When it was 1 1/2 days before my arrival date I still hadn't received anything. When I queried this on a message I then received the Welcome message with the details for checking in. The only other complaint that I have is that the apartment was very stuffy the first night as if it had been closed up for days.
