Fabulous location. Staff were super friendly and helpful. Hostel was spotlessly clean, and warm despite October chills. The self-catering was well appointed. The dining rooms and drawing rooms were very comfortable, the latter with plenty of big comfy sofas where we spent very happy evenings colouring, playing games, and eating tea. The whole property had a lovely old-world charm. My daughters were a bit surprised that it wasn't more hotel-like, but once they understood that it was a hostel and not trying to be a hotel, they fell in love with it and didn't want to leave at the end of our stay. In fact, I'd forgotten how wonderful a hostel could be and had some lovely conversations with other guests while making tea. We're definitely going to make hostelling a regular thing!
Scraping the barrel, but the shower heads were almost too powerful, with fine jets of water. I learnt the first day not to leave my evening shower too late (cold + jets = ouch). But every other night was fine. Also, room would have benefited from some storage options.

Location was superb. And the building itself was incredible, the staff we spoke to were very helpful and friendly.
Parking was an issue although we learnt in the morning that there was an overflow car park, but this wasn't signposted.

The building is beautiful probably among one of the best hostels. I love the big hall/living room area with the high ceilings
heating non existent, this is a theme with YHA for some reason most now appear to be quite cold, I am not sure if this is a deliberate tactic to save money/cut emissions but it is wrong, their was a fire which was not being used. I do really think its important for hostels to be warm!
