The property is absolutely beautiful and expertly maintained. Everything was clean, well-organized, and easily understood by a non-Japanese speaker.
Everything about it was great. Maybe one thing is it’s nice if more windows would open to let fresh air in.

Interesting albeit somewhat dated 70s feel but also traditional rooms with amazing wonderful views and facilities, up at the Hills at Matsumoto for a more special stay than just staying downtown by the station. Also has a terrific service to store your bags at a hotel right next to the train station and get free Shuttle there and back. Also, unique to have private onsen availability for a very reasonable rate.
It is a 20–25 minute shuttle ride, but worth it for the views and location.

The Hotel Shoho is an exceptional onsen ryokan. The staff go out of their way to be helpful, using translation apps to facilitate communication in English or other languages. The views across Matsumoto and the Japanese Alps are breathtaking from the main lobby and from the individual rooms. The afternoon drinks reception was a nice touch, and the kaiseki dinner was memorable. We were able to arrange massages at the last minute, and the therapist was excellent. Our room included an open-air private onsen bath, so we didn't try the private baths. The hotel is located a little ways outside of Matsumoto, so it felt like an oasis of calm.

The bathing facilities are amazing. The breakfast buffet great
It was not clean. The cushions in room dirty. The building we stayed in smelled foul. The smell permeated our room. The carpets in hallways dirty. Needs updating
