Nothing to dislike

What we appreciated: Partial ocean view from our room! Across the street from cliff walk and 5-minute walk to town center. The bathroom, beds and desk were all clean and as they should be. Comfy mattresses (according to both hubby and me, who both have back pain issues). Good blackout curtains. Possibility to have our dog in the room. Convenient parking in the street out front if you buy permit (about £20/day). One young man in hotel reception was particularly helpful and pleasant (even in unpleasant situations), and the handyman was also friendly and an effective trouble-shooter.

When we first arrived, I was first struck by how UNPLEASANTLY WARM it was in the reception. I touched the radiators in reception and around the corner in the restaurant, and they were both turned on high despite it being 21 degrees outside and with full sun coming in the restaurant and reception windows. I mentioned this to the receptionist, who seemed to have been completely unaware of it until then, but it went over to check it and it looked like he adjusted it right then. You would think that the hotel would be happy to conserve on heating costs! Also upon arrival, the lift was being repaired. Fortunately, it was done in just time for us to take our luggage up. Our room was absolutely SUFFOCATING when we first entered it. This seems to be typical in every Folkestone hotel we've ever stayed at! It is incomprehensible that the cleaning staff does not anticipate this when warm weather is announced -- what is so difficult about closing curtains and leaving windows open a bit for pre-booked rooms? We couldn't even open the three seafront windows more than about 3 inches (7-8 cm) at first, and even then there was nothing to prop them open with except 1 single small block of wood. This required 2 people (or 1 person with hands!). Same thing with the small bathroom window. (The aforementioned man in receptionist got the handyman to take care of this very efficiently within the hour.) The handyman was able to open two of the large windows** about 16 inches (45 cm) and prop them up with sturdy wood scraps, although the third one was apparently unopenable. The bathroom window was also opened, thank goodness! We were not interested in eating in the restaurant since it seemed too warm, even in the morning. The building has good bones, but it is VERY SHABBY and worn, especially the carpets, rugs, and curtains in both rooms and hallways.
