About this cottage rental

Welcome to Rivergreen Cottage!

Leave the complexities of modern life behind and enjoy the simplicity of our off-the-grid Rivergreen Cottage. Perfect for those who love camping but prefer a little extra comfort, this cozy retreat offers a unique opportunity to unplug, unwind, and experience the natural beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Please note-if you are not a nature lover, this property is most likely not going to be a good fit for you.

Conveniently located just 10 minutes from Massanutten Resort and 20 minutes from the Swift Run entrance to Shenandoah National Park, Rivergreen Cottage offers a peaceful, remote setting while remaining close to local restaurants and amenities.

Getting Here
Please read before booking!

Rivergreen Cottage is somewhat remote, and reaching the property requires traveling on an unpaved road made up of stone, dirt, and, in some areas, grass. You will even drive through a pasture!

Drive slowly and carefully when approaching the cottage.
A vehicle with good ground clearance is recommended, as low-clearance vehicles may have difficulty navigating the road.
During winter weather, front-wheel drive or 4x4 is necessary. When snow is on the ground, 4x4 is absolutely required to reach the cottage safely.
Due to the terrain and access road, this property is not recommended for guests with mobility limitations.

Life on the Farm

Rivergreen Cottage is located on a working farm, so don't be surprised if you wake up to cattle grazing nearby! The cottage itself is fenced, and the cattle generally keep to themselves.

You may also meet Duke, our friendly donkey. He's a little shy at first, but he may warm up enough to enjoy a treat from your hand!

Because the property is near a body of water, you may encounter insects and other bugs during your stay. We have monthly pest control treatments to help minimize them. Please plan on seeing a bug or two.

The surrounding area is rich in railroad history, and you may occasionally hear passing trains. We encourage you to visit the train museum in nearby Shenandoah for a glimpse into the area's history.

Off-the-Grid Living
Rivergreen Cottage is solar-powered, with a backup generator for added reliability. The system operates automatically, so there's nothing you need to do. From time to time, especially after dark, you may hear the generator start as it recharges the batteries.

It's all part of the off-the-grid experience!

A Cozy Getaway
Rivergreen Cottage is small, charming, and designed for a relaxing escape. It's ideal for two guests but can accommodate up to four. Please keep in mind that the space will feel quite cozy with four people.

Scot is a great host! Very communicative and willing to do whatever he can to make your stay great. The property is beautiful and the cabin has everything you could need. Location is great too! Not too far from the towns and right on the river. Hope to come back!

We had such a great stay in Shenandoah! The room was extremely clean and cozy, and the views were absolutely beautiful. The host was very attentive and made sure we had everything we needed throughout our stay. You can really tell they care about their guests’ experience. We would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area!

Great place to stay, away from the busyness, immersed in nature.

Overall, the stay is fine. At the price point, my spouse and I weren’t expecting luxury. We were excited to spend a weekend in Shenandoah Valley, go hiking, enjoy the scenery, and spend time with our dog. The house is located on a back pasture of a large farm. It is very beautiful. The first con for us was finding the entrance to the house. The road to the house goes through the farm on a rough terrain path. One part of the road is very steep, and I would strongly suggest bringing either a truck or SUV with good clearance to be able to make it. A car would likely struggle getting up the path. There is an electric fence around the house, which our dog zapped himself on once. The listing states walk to river, but the path is steep, overgrown, with only an electric fence to hold onto. The interior of the home was nice, but this is not the place for bug-fearers. The porch was covered in spiders. We found a few in the home, as well. On the first morning, my wife found a tick on my pillow inches from my head. There were a few stains on the comforter when we arrived as well. The owner was very responsive, kind and helpful. Overall - we had a good stay but want to let others know of what to expect. TLDR: Pros - the price and location. The nearby town is lovely. 20 mins to Shenandoah National Park, wineries and brewries. Beautiful landscape. Hot showers. Cons: Bugs (spiders, ticks), road may be too rough for a sedan, trail to river is steep and overgrown.
