Since there aren’t a lot of options in Carlsbad that allow pets, this hotel did the trick — we had a place to sleep. When I asked to change rooms after the first night, they did accommodate my request, which I appreciated. The lady at the front desk who helped with the room change was very kind and understanding. Breakfast was decent and the breakfast staff was also very kind.
Our first room was in bad shape. It was right next to the street and I could hear traffic all night long. Plus the door had obviously been broken into before, which terrified me. It was difficult to lock and wouldn’t swing closed like hotel doors normally do. There was a gap where the door had been kicked in and bugs were getting inside, so I stuffed it with a tissue. We were also put in a smoking room because when we checked in, they said that’s all that was left. Which I don’t really understand, because I requested a non-smoking room far in advance, so why wasn’t there a room available if I’d already booked it? The only redeeming moment was that they did allow me to change rooms the second night and our second room was further from the road and had a working door (and was non-smoking). It was still just a mediocre room though, and to me not worth the price or the hype this hotel carries on its website. The carpets were old and dirty and need replacing. Also the pet fee is heftier than most hotels I’ve stayed at.
