The trip to Ventura was to attend the OJAI STORYTELLING FESTIVAL. Ojai is just a 20 min drive away, but the motel/hotel prices are crazy up there, so we always stay near the beautiful Pacific Ocean!!! This property is just up the street from THE GRAPE, a wonderful place to listen to live music. It's also just blocks away from CASA DE SOLIA, obviously a Mexican restaurant where they serve quality.
We try different older motels each time we come to Ventura; this was our first time at Crystal Lodge Motel. It's an older style motel, which has been renovated nicely. Our room was facing Thompson Blvd, a main street, but there are rooms on the back side as well.
The night noise was little and the sound of upstairs visitors not terribly noticable. The VALUE is excellent especially for three people. Everything was clean. The floors are not carpeted, so bring your hotel sandals, but the floors were as clean as possible. The whole room was clean. We stayed in the 'family' room, which translates into three beds in one big room. (A three bed hotel or motel room is VERY RARE!!! Usually they will roll in a horrible cot or there is a purchased in 1950 bed/couch, which your dog doesn't even like to sleep on.) I love a soft bed and this queen size was absolutely perfect.
An excellent kitchen with full size fridge, stainless steel sink, microwave and a usable stove oven took up the whole back wall of our room. A perfect room if you are planning on staying a few days. This is going to be our 'Ventura Home' base from now one.
My only complaint: there was only one chair in a three bedroom room!! What one office chair. We couldn't all sit at the table. Go get some folding chairs from WALMART and put them in the kitchen area so we all can sit at the table and enjoy a meal. This will also stop someone from having to eat while on the bed and spilling food, thus possibly ruining the bedding! GET SOME FOLDING CHAIRS!!!!

Rooms are quite small and some of the furniture could use an upgrade. Could provide more/better basic toiletries

The hotel itself is clean and comfortable. Beds are OK and shower pressure was great, which is rare. The room did have a full size stove and refrigerator which was nice but I was only there for 1 night and did not use them. I saw some dishes stored under the kitchen sink but I didn't pay attention to what all they had. Large TV with a pretty good channel selection.
My biggest issue was the man who is the owner/manager. I first called the motel and attempted to make reservations and explained to him that I am a disabled elder woman who can't climb stairs. This is a 2 story motel without an elevator. He tried for about 10 minutes to make a reservation for me then finally told me he was having trouble with his computer and told me to book through booking.com and be sure to request a downstairs room. I did that, and received confirmation that they could accommodate my request. When I arrived he stated that he only had upstairs rooms and when I told him what we had discussed he stated that "I only said that we will try". ( He gave me an upstairs room and when I had extreme difficulty climbing the stairs he just said you can do it). He again had problems with his computer and kept trying to charge me for my room until I showed him the confirmation that I had already paid through booking. com. I also never received a receipt and am watching closely to make certain he did not charge me after I left. He also was not able to give me a key to my room when I checked in, claiming to be having computer problems again. He did carry my suitcase up the stairs for me but handed the tote bag I had with me for me to carry and told me that he would bring me my key later. It took him 2 hours and 2 phone calls from me to get my room key. The parking lot is very small and difficult to park in.
