The staff were friendly and doing their best in challenging circumstances, as there was a picket of striking hotel workers going on outside the hotel during my stay. My room was spacious and the bed was very comfy. It was quiet and I slept well. The location was great for exploring the Magnificent Mile.
I was surprised the hotel has a 4* rating. There was no-one to greet me or help me with my bags when I arrived (perhaps the doormen were on strike). The decor was all in shades of brown and the furnishings in my room showed sign of wear and tear - there were permanent stains in the bathtub and the bedside cabinet was worn and chipped.. Prices were hiked up for marathon weekend so my stay did not represent good value for money. The thing that most upset me was being charged a $24 'delivery fee' for items including 'free' bottles of water on check in (although I wasn't offered any and had to go back and ask); use of fax and printing facilities (why would I want to use those?); 'free' local phone calls (who uses the hotel phone nowadays?) and, worst of all, for a 20% discount on food in the hotel restaurant. So I was charged for having a discount that I hadn't asked for and didn't plan to use. This seemed like profit gouging and left a bad taste in the mouth.

The staff they at The Hotel was extremely friendly and professional. Stayed at the Drake three weeks earlier and had a completely different experience. This hotel has it just right, extremely responsive and friendly from guest services picking up the phone to all the white stuff for breakfast or late night drinks. You could tell they were genuinely happy to be there which makes you as a guest feel right at home.
As a historical hotel, there are many features that could be highlighted, but the decor in the main lobby just seems to be muted. But number one dislike of The Hotel is the small bar in the lobby surrounded by large open spaces. If an investment was made to remodel the lobby and incorporate a historical themed large bar, they would knock it out of the park as their competition across the street has a bat cave for their historical bar instead of offering drinks in their beautiful, second floor lobby. The millennium has the advantage of light and bright first floor lobby with easy access to a bar. Well, the facility was definitely clean. We felt like a couple extra pieces of furniture in the hotel room would have been nice. Our room had a random chair with no purposeful place. We moved it to the other side of the room and would’ve loved a small table next to it. Loved the artwork in the room!!

Big roomie bathroom and bedroom. Space to walk around for two people without feeling cramped.
Cafe very overpriced. Not a good value for a convenience meal.
