Run down

Clean, had everything you could need, handy for the train to Edinburgh and right by a small shop for last minute groceries.

I let the property know upon arrival that two windows wouldn't close, a door was falling off its hinges, and one of the window treatments fell but they didn't acknowledge it, much less sort it out. We lucked out with mild weather in late September, but it could have been absolutely freezing. The place was run down but serviceable.

Extremely Disappointing Stay – No Hot Water, Misleading Communication, and Unprofessional Conduct I am a long-standing Booking.com customer and close to reaching Genius Level 3, and this is the first time I’ve felt compelled to leave such a serious complaint. Unfortunately, my recent stay at Tranquil Retreat in Gorebridge fell far below acceptable standards due to significant issues with both the property and the host. Upon check-in, I discovered that the boiler was not working and there was no hot water. I immediately contacted the provided number, and a staff member,who appeared to live nearby attended. I handed over the keys and informed them I would return later that evening (around 11:30 PM), expecting the issue to be resolved. However, on my return, the problem remained unresolved. I was told that no qualified engineer was available and that it would be addressed the following day. This was unacceptable, as I had booked and paid for that night. After contacting Booking.com customer service, I was asked by the host not to escalate the issue and was instead offered access to bathroom facilities in a neighbouring property an inappropriate and unreasonable solution. Throughout the night, staff entered the property multiple times (approximately 5–6 visits), yet no qualified engineer ever attended. Despite this, the property later falsely claimed via Booking.com that an engineer had attended and that I refused access this is completely untrue. By approximately 1:20 AM, the issue remained unresolved and staff left. I was forced to stay overnight without hot water after repeated late-night disturbances. Following check-out, I was further disappointed to receive a message alleging additional cleaning charges and other claims I strongly dispute. This behaviour feels both unprofessional and misleading. I strongly recommend that this property be investigated to prevent similar experiences for future guests.
