Beware of scammers!
Nothing. I don’t understand why people choose to deceive others, as the short-term gain from fraud will ultimately result in much greater lost profits in the long run.
We booked a room for an overnight stay on Booking.com at the Marin Konaklama in the Turkish city of Pendik and paid for it online (2,500 lira). We chose this hotel because we were traveling with a cat, and not all hotels accept pets.
It was raining outside, it was night, and after a 12-hour car journey we were hoping for proper rest. However, at the hotel we were told that they would not give us the room (even though it had already been paid for) because it was “not profitable” for them (???). In order for us to stay overnight, we were offered to cancel the booking on Booking and pay them 3,500 lira directly on the spot. Given the circumstances, all we wanted was to sleep, so we agreed. Since we had no cash and they did not accept card payments, we had to withdraw money from the nearest ATM.
When we finally got into the room, we discovered that it was under renovation: it was cold, the windows were open for ventilation, the air conditioner was not working, there was no hot water, and there was a strong smell of plaster. The room was designed for two people, but there were three of us. We had to make a third pillow out of towels and sleep together in one bed. We were so exhausted that we did not want to waste time and energy arguing or demanding another room.
In the morning, we found that the main entrance door to the hotel was locked. We wasted more time trying to find the administrator, who never showed up. Eventually, we opened the door with a key we found at the reception desk.
The money we paid through Booking was never refunded by the hotel owner, so the total cost of one night ended up being 6,000 lira. We do not recommend this terrible hotel to anyone. We believe that Booking should have a consumer protection mechanism, and that the owner of this hotel should be held accountable for such blatant mistreatment of people and animals.
