ArtHouse - Book at your own peril!
Nothing
Extremely disappointing and completely unacceptable experience
We received confirmation of our booking only to have the host email us at 12:43 on the day of check-in to tell us that there had been a mistake and that the accommodation could no longer honour our reservation (turns out she had double-booked the property).
By that point, our family of eight (Grannies and Babies in tow) had already driven for around two hours to Hermanus and had begun some sight-seeing there unaware that our holiday was about to be rbought to an abrupt end when I saw her message shortly after 15h. .
Having a confirmed booking cancelled literally 2.5hrs before check-in caused considerable disruption and left us scrambling to find alternative accommodation for eight people at very short notice - which proved impossible on the Saturday of a busy weekend - in fact we had to drive all the way back to Cape Town and forget about whale watching.
What made the situation even more frustrating was the complete lack of meaningful assistance from the host. I repeatedly tried to call after receiving the cancellation message because we urgently needed to understand what had happened and find a solution, but my calls were mysteriously never even attended. The host Tanja did all she could to avoid actually speaking to me after this massive blunder on her part — which said a lot aswell about the character of the person.
In more than 20 years of travelling, this THE most poorly handled accommodation experience we have encountered. Mistakes can happen, but the responsibility of a host is to deal with them promptly, communicate properly and make a genuine effort to minimise the consequences for their guests. None of that happened here.
Ironically, the other family which the "host" had double-booked us against was kind enough to show us the rooms afterwards, and having seen them, we ultimately felt somewhat relieved that we had not ended up staying there.
