St. Leonard's-on-Sea Garden (Basement) Flat on London Road, 7th-26th August 2025.
The location was brilliant - close to the heart of St. Leonard's-on-Sea; more importantly, near to where we needed to be to assist with the birth of our firstborn. There was plenty of space and it was easy to access. The beds were comfortable and linen and towels were provided (and appreciated). Teabags &c were welcomed and the kitchen was pretty well appointed.
I did not want to be unkind in this review, so I tried to mark it higher - perhaps if the stay was shorter, we would have been less sensitive to the issues; but we did put our faith and (for us) a lot of money into this booking; I expect better.
There was a musty smell upon arrival which did not fully dissipate even after over two weeks with windows open. It seemed like the place had not been inhabited for quite some time and the staid odour was not pleasant, but liveable.
Not having a washing machine was a negative.
Apart from anonymous replies to emails (which is irritating, as it negates responsibility), we had no interaction - we saw no staff throughout the stay, and responses were reactive not proactive.
Certain things really stood out:
- being told to change the bins on a Wednesday and then finding there were no liners provided.
- scaffolding being erected in the days shortly after arrival was a surprise; it felt like we were paying for renovation of the rest of the property.
- being awoken by the sound of drilling at 7am; I did contact the property and this was not repeated but it was still very unpleasant when we were really sleep deprived around the birth.
- there was no vacuum cleaner, dustpan and brush, mop &c. which was tricky as after two weeks the house really needed cleaning and we could not effectively do that (especially carpets).
- on the final day, the hot water was turned-off - this was particularly unpleasant as washes were necessary ahead of a full day's travelling. Waking early, to leave before the early cut-off, then having to take a cold shower/wash with cold water was really not a good send-off.
