What should’ve been a relaxing ski holiday ended with skin rashes, doctor visits, and huge disappointment.
Our stay at Ridge River Retreat from July 1st to 4th was an absolute nightmare. What should have been a rare and joyful family ski trip turned into a health crisis for our entire family — and I am angry and deeply disappointed.
We were traveling with young children and grandparents, skiing at Mt Buller. On the second and third nights, we used the spa at the property briefly after long days on the slopes. We were exhausted, used the spa to relax, and went straight to bed. Our kids mentioned some itchiness, but we didn’t think much of it at the time.
After checking out on the 4th and returning to Melbourne that night, both of my children began to complain of serious itching. The next morning, I was shocked to find them covered in red rashes. I checked myself and my mother — all of us had itchy rashes over large areas of our bodies. I immediately took my kids to a GP, who diagnosed it as a chemical-induced allergic reaction, most likely caused by overexposure to spa chemicals.
I want to be clear: my children swim twice a week at a public pool and have never had any skin reaction or allergy. This incident is the first and only time they’ve ever developed rashes — and the doctor was very clear that the spa water must have contained excessive or improperly managed chemicals. This was not a mild issue. It was a serious health hazard.
This level of negligence is simply unacceptable. How can a holiday rental in such a well-established tourist area fail to maintain something as basic — and as critical — as water hygiene? Watching my children suffer all night with painful itching and discomfort made me furious.
As if that weren’t enough, the property also had major maintenance issues: the ceiling in the living room leaks badly whenever someone showers upstairs. We had to place a bucket on the floor to catch the dripping water or risk soaking the entire living area. Again, completely unacceptable for any guest accommodation.
I do not leave negative reviews lightly.
