About this apartment rental

Sit at a wooden desk and summon the writer's muse at Jane Austen's family home from 1801 to 1805.

In this immaculately maintained and lovingly restored apartment, walls teem with artwork and shelves overflow with curious objects. Original flagstone floors in spacious rooms lead to a light and airy kitchen overlooking the rose-filled courtyard.

From heated mirrors to surround sound, this award-winning space, furnished with an eclectic mix of new and old, does not compromise on comfort.
The space
Situated directly across the road from the world-famous Holburne Museum and Georgian Vauxhall (Pleasure Garden) at Sydney Gardens, Jane Austen's home in Bath is located in a Grade I listed 1794 Georgian townhouse. In this house, Jane started work on her early and unfinished novella, "The Watsons".

The apartment was once the kitchen and butler's pantry of the Austen home, and provides spacious accommodation in rooms packed with original Georgian features, from panelled walls to vast kitchen fireplaces, with a private entrance and front and rear courtyards.

The kitchen is stocked with good quality pots, pans, cutlery (silverware), glasses and crockery, and has a five burner Mercury range for the chefs in all of us. There is, of course, a dishwasher, a coffee machine, a fridge and a freezer - and a sink overlooking a rose-filled and sunny courtyard. Also within the apartment are a high capacity washing machine and tumble-drier.

The living room, which was the kitchen of the house, has a large chaise-style sofa, several ridiculously comfortable victorian armchairs, a William IV Indian Rosewood dining table and sideboard, a printer and monitor for those who just *have* to work, and a 55" television with surround sound system. It features original Georgian panelling, window shutters, flagstone floor and kitchen range.

The master bedroom was once the Butler's Pantry, and has a 1920's mens' wardrobe for your stylish attire, a 19th century Louis XIV double bed, and overlooks the quiet rear courtyard.

The rear bedroom, or "map room", offers a single authentic Japanese futon on tatami mats and wardrobe for clothing, and also overlooks the rear courtyard.

The bathroom has been newly refitted and includes a luxurious rainfall shower, underfloor heating, a heated mirror, and toiletries such as shampoo, conditioner, and body wash.

The front and rear courtyards both offer seating and sunshine.

Guest access

You will have full access to the entire apartment and both front and rear courtyards, which are exclusively for the use of the apartment.

Other things to note

This is a unique opportunity to stay in the home of legendary author Jane Austen.

Guests will arrive to a clean and completely prepared apartment, with keys in a keysafe located conveniently nearby.

The host max was very helpful and friendly indeed he really made sure we had all the relevant information required for our stay …and was on hand in case we need him for anything else …..may I say in this really beautifully planned and laid out home connected to the Jane Austin family and herself …we had a good wonder around looking at pictures trinkets and all things history …..before we’d even unpacked has every room had been meticulously been planned …yet I suppose to give you a feel of historical importance although all not connected it never mattered ….we had a very pleasant stay and we’d definitely would come again …. Highly recommended you can’t come to bath and not taste a piece of history even for a romantic stay knowing Jane Austin was once walked these rooms and stairs definitely gives you a touch of nostalgia………ray

We stayed during the heatwave (38C) and were so worried about the trip but the apartment stayed so cool, it was like a sanctuary!! Better than being at home! Maxwell is the perfect host - communication was brilliant and he was super helpful in making our stay comfortable in the heat, having fans sent to the apartment (by the very lovely housekeeper) and giving tips on keeping the place cool. He was also incredibly patient with me panicking over the heat! To top it off I left a necklace behind and he contacted me to arrange postage free of charge. The apartment itself is great. Super quirky with so much character and lots to look at. You feel like you're in a well loved home. Very comfortable and well equipped. We happily stayed in more than we'd intended to.The location is great. Right by the Holborne Museum and Pulteney bridge, 5-10 min walk from the centre. We had the best stay, thank you so much!

The flat is lovely, very characterful and well situated with easy walking access to all the sights of Bath. All rooms were spotless and very comfortable. Everything needed is provided. It feels like you are a welcome guest in someone's much loved home rather than a holiday let.

This beautiful property is decorated with an eccentric and fascinating style. We loved it so much we could have stayed for longer to experience it more. Especially our six year old who had such a good time. Perfectly located a five minute walk from town and right next to two stunning parks. We will definitely be in touch the next time we visit Bath via Longleat
