About this house rental

This home was built in 1895 and is listed on the National Historic Register. Property is a half acre and the front porch overlooks 2/3 of it. We are on the north side of Tybee, away from the commercial area , crowds and traffic. For families this is far and away the most desirable part of the island. The beach is 120 yards from the front of the house and Jaycee Park is right behind the house. There is a house on the left and one on the right that are both 56 feet from our house - you will not be looking out the window at a wall of the house beside you. The park has walking trails, Pickleball Court, Frisbee Golf and a brand new Kidde Park. This is a great house for 2 families or a generational family reunion. This is where our best reviews and repeat renters come from. The home was originally occupied by the base doctor of Fort Screven. When the base was deactivated it was purchased by one of the previous mayors of Savannah, my parents purchased it from his estate in the 60’s.

The full kitchen has granite countertops, high end appliances (including two dishwashers, two sinks, a large refrigerator, a five burner Bosch induction stove, and a stereo system with a Bluetooth hookup). There is seating for 14-16 people at the dining room table. The den/library houses a flat screened TV. A marvelous open porch graces three sides of this home with approximately 2000 square feet of outdoor living area and includes rocking chairs and two picnic tables. The first floor features one bedroom (originally the 'Stryker's Quarters'), which is located just off the kitchen. There is a queen size bed in this bedroom, a separate air conditioner, a full bath with a claw foot tub, and its own entrance. There is additional bathroom with a shower on the first floor. There are three bedrooms and three full baths on the second floor, which also has about 1000 square feet of open porches. Each of the bedrooms on the second floor is abundantly sized, has tall ceilings, and a working transom above the door. The third floor has two bedrooms and one bath: one bedroom has a double and queen beds, the other has a queen, a double, and a twin bed. All bedrooms, as well as the kitchen, living room, and downstairs hallway, have ceiling fans.

This house was originally built as a 3 bedroom house with an additional bedroom on the first floor. The two bedroom on the third floor were added later. The best “fit” for this house is couples on the 2nd floor and older children and young adults in the other bedrooms - the third floor is really not suitable for young children and the 1st floor bedroom is too remote . This grand home is for the exclusive use of its guests. The beach is a five minute walk (120 yards) from the front door through a quiet (no traffic) neighborhood. Since there is no nearby public beach access parking, this one of the least occupied sections of beach on the island.

This was one of the houses considered for the movie “The Big Chill”. We have been told by guest that it has that “vibe “ to it, however local ordinance does not allow parties and events such as weddings and graduation parties (parties/events are limited to the renters).

The Fort Screven and North Beach area offers fascinating military history, beautiful dunes, long beaches, a nice park, and an eclectic community of homes that is fun to observe on foot or bike. The live oaks, natural dune with sea oats and other dune plants and animals, along with a view of Tybee Roads, as well as Daufuskie and Hilton Head islands make for a beautiful natural setting worth visiting and exploring. Also attracting attention are the mammoth container cargo ships, some almost as long as a 75 story building, plowing the waters of Savannah harbor.

The Fort Screven installation gave Tybee a military character for more than 50 years, when 30 percent of Tybee Island's population consisted of military personnel. Today, the former base is a National Historic District. Behind the Officers' Row houses is the former parade ground. Today it is Jaycee Park. Lieutenant Colonel George Catlett Marshall (who was responsible later in his career for the Marshall Plan for the economic reorganization of Europe after World War II) lived next door. During his tenure at Fort Screven, the City of Savannah gave the crepe myrtles to the fort as thanks to Marshall and his community minded command. A small creek winds through the park, adding to its attractiveness, as do the Live Oaks, bald cypress, cedars, bayberries, and wax myrtles.

Our family of 14 had a wonderful stay at 9 Officers Row on Tybee Island. The host was great to work with. He answered any questions that I’ve had since we booked. I even texted a few times while we were there and he answered quickly. The house is a gorgeous historic home with four floors, which includes the basement where the laundry was located. The beach access is just across the street, go by a few houses and you are at the boardwalk that leads to the ocean. We did have six small children under the age of eight and Veterans Park is located just across the street from the back porch and it was wonderful. We visited it each night. The house also had some sports equipment, including a basketball that our older grandsons got a lot of good use out of. They also had beach carts, a few umbrellas and chairs that we were able to borrow as well. The kitchen is well stocked with any appliance that you can think of. We decided we would do milkshakes one night and was able to do that since there was a blender available. Most people come to Tybee Island, and take family pictures on the beach, and that was our plan and we did take a few on the beach, but the front porch made a wonderful place to take our family pictures this year. I highly recommend 9 Officers Row for a family vacation!

Everything more than met our expectations. My only suggestion is you need a railing going down the concrete steps toward the gazebo and beach. At 77 I found I needed someone to hold on to me as I maneuvered the steps. But there was always someone around. All the other steps were fine. Loved the outdoor drink refrigerator. Kitchen was a dream to cook in. And the 10 family members fit so comfortably around the dining room table.

Our family vacation at this historic home was truly wonderful. With seven adults, we had more than enough space for everyone to enjoy their own personal quiet time while still having plenty of room to gather together. The house offered so many activities—chess, checkers, board games—that kept us entertained whenever we weren’t at the beach. The beach itself was perfect. No crowds, beautiful water, and exactly what we hoped for. We also took a dolphin excursion, which the kids absolutely loved. This location is ideal for families who want to slow down, relax, and spend meaningful time together across multiple generations. The home had every amenity we needed and several thoughtful extras we didn’t expect—beach chairs, bicycles, laundry access, and more. Because the home was built in the 1800s, there were a few simple instructions to follow, like keeping the upstairs doors closed and using fans to stay cool, but that was completely understandable and added to the charm of staying in such a unique place. Our host was incredibly accommodating and accessible, though everything was so well prepared that we didn’t need a thing once we arrived. It felt like every detail had already been anticipated. We even enjoyed the novelty of going up and down the stairs—if you needed something, it was guaranteed to be on the opposite floor, which became a fun little part of the experience. This vacation was perfect for us, and we left with wonderful memories.

This was an annual summer vacation for our two sons and their family - six adults and seven children. Excellent location.
