Schwelm is a town in Westphalia that is over 500 years old, located directly on the border with the Rhineland. As the current county seat of the Ennepe-Ruhr District (NRW), Schwelm—along with the district—is considered part of the Ruhr region, which extends to the north. To the south, the town transitions into the scenic plateaus of the Bergisch-Sauerland Mountains. Schwelm’s history, culture, cityscape, and local economy have been shaped over the centuries by its location on the border between Westphalia and the Rhineland (Bergisches Land). Schwelm is the smallest political municipality in North Rhine-Westphalia in terms of area.
Thanks to the Wuppertal-Nord highway interchange, the city is conveniently located along the A1, A43, and A46 highways. From here, the metropolitan areas of Cologne, Düsseldorf, Wuppertal, and the eastern Ruhr region can be reached quickly. Federal Highway 483 runs through the city from north to south. Public transportation is well-developed, featuring a dense bus network and rail connections to the main ICE line via S-Bahn and regional express (RE) services, as well as interregional connections in Wuppertal and Hagen.

Good stay in this very calm FerienWohnung. From Schwelm we visited Wuppertal and we liked it much as well.

We were greeted with a very clean, pleasant-smelling, and wonderfully quiet apartment. There was plenty of room for the two of us and our two pets for our 3-night stay. We used only one of the bedrooms, as it was very nice to wake up to a view of the garden in the morning. We hardly used the comfortable couch in the living room as we preferred the large kitchen once we returned from our outings. It was a short walk to the train station, so a long day of exploration in nearby Wuppertal was easy to accomplish. While there were plenty of choices in the apartment for food and drinks to purchase, we opted for the Rewe/Aldi center just across the street. Contactless check-in and check-out made things easy as well. Overall, it was a very comfortable apartment that is close to many interesting sites. Many thanks to the host and the cleaning crew for providing a pleasant experience in Schwelm!
