€250 Deposit Withheld Without Evidence — Host Failed to Cooperate With Insurer

Not applicable.

Our experience was deeply disappointing and, in my view, wholly unacceptable. We arrived late and immediately found the sofa bed difficult to open. It already showed obvious signs of wear, previous repairs, and poor maintenance, and my child had to sleep on it in considerable discomfort. Because we arrived late and had a tightly scheduled stay, we did not report the condition immediately—an omission we regret. Nevertheless, we left the sofa bed in the same condition in which we found it. After checkout, the host accused us of damaging it and withheld the full €250 security deposit. I repeatedly requested basic supporting evidence, including the original purchase invoice, or a repair quotation, or a replacement estimate, and a receipt confirming the €250 charge, so that I could submit the matter to my liability insurer. Despite persistent follow-up over two months, the host failed to provide any of these documents. My insurer also attempted to contact the host but received no response. The host’s inaction to provide evidence or cooperate directly with insurance prevented me from pursuing a legitimate insurance claim. Consequently, I lost the entire €250 deposit for alleged damage that was never substantiated. Given the sofa bed’s clearly pre-existing condition and the complete lack of documentation, I consider the withholding of the deposit unjustified and unreasonable. The accommodation itself also raised serious concerns: the building was old, the common areas had a strong unpleasant odour, and the apartment’s toilet smelled strongly of urine. The beds were not comfortable at all. Based on the condition of the property and the host’s handling of the deposit, I cannot recommend this accommodation. Future guests should photograph and report every defect immediately upon arrival and obtain written confirmation before using any damaged or poorly maintained furniture.

Problems with admission arrangements were upsetting and the basic nature of the apartment was not a

The location is good and the apartment was clean but basic.

We were not sent codes for the key pads in advance and when we eventually received them after a protracted phone call with the owner the key was not under the doormat as promised so we had to go out again and go to a local shop. The owner seemed to think that we owed a deposit which I didn't think was correct. I was nervous about being caught up in a financial scam. The public areas of the building are in poor condition although there are repairs going on and the apartment seems to be partially renovated. New tiled floors and kitchen sink and WC but the shower was grotty and the very old hose fell off during our stay. Furniture is basic.
