Stay elsewhere

This apartment was in a great location, but it is nearly impossible to find without the help of the owner. It has plenty of space.

This was probably the worst stay I’ve ever had after visiting over 80 countries and staying in hundreds of rooms. The owner sent me a message I believe the morning of telling me to call her or have the taxi call her as I was entering town so she could give directions. This is obviously complicated if you don’t have a working phone in a foreign country. We eventually found her, after our taxi driver was quite frustrated. We go upstairs and see that she’s still cleaning when we arrive at 12:30p, despite the fact that she approved a noon check in two days prior (which was the normal check in time). Then she tells us that she would like the large full payment for the room in cash. In the booking, which I went back to, there was nothing that said I had to pay in cash. In fact, it specially said I could pay in cash or Visa, so I was quite shocked that she was requiring this. In all of my years of traveling and booking through this site, I’ve never had an owner change the rules once I arrived. I am a female traveler and I never travel with large amounts of cash, and the little cash that I do have, I hold on to for restaurants or shops that only take cash. I explained to her with the help of Google Translate that I do not have cash for her and need to use Visa as stated on Booking.com. She then told me that I could go to an ATM. I do not have a debit card with me and even if I did, there are ATM fees for foreign transactions. She said she is just a small business and can’t take Visa, but it is now the law in Albania to take credit cards for businesses. She said perhaps her brother could come take the card and run it through his taxi business but apparently he was unavailable for the 48 hours we were there. It was quite stressful because she kept messaging about where we were and when she was going to get paid. My friend at one point was nervous about if our belongings would be safe in the apartment. When we showed her that my reservation in Booking.

Simply brilliant!!

The apartment was very clean, the hostess was very friendly and helpful, the towels and sheets were always clean, and she even made us Turkish coffee.
