About this villa rental
Masseria Don Mattia is a beautiful villa with a pool near the sea in Castro, on the Adriatic coast of Puglia. An oasis of peace in the heart of the Salento countryside where you can immerse yourself, letting yourself be enchanted by the rustling of the trees and the surrounding nature. Once the country residence (dating back to 1737) of the local noble Bacile di Castiglione family, it has been reborn following a skillful and meticulous restoration that preserved the property’s historic and traditional features, thereby imparting a warmth and atmosphere that are both elegant and refined in their simplicity and authenticity.
The farmhouse is located between Otranto and Santa Maria di Leuca, making it an excellent starting point for exploring Salento and its small, picturesque villages, where you can still experience the authentic atmosphere of Salento life today; where you can buy fresh fruits and vegetables directly from local farmers or at various open-air markets. It is therefore ideal for those who love the countryside but also want to be close to the sea. The property as a whole is very spacious and well-organized. An excellent choice for large groups thanks to the various common areas and the practical layout of the interior spaces.
Masseria Don Mattia is surrounded by olive trees and, on two sides, by ancient, shady oak groves. The small entrance gate to the property opens onto a passageway leading to a beautiful, spacious paved courtyard, where you are immediately captivated by the historic charm of the homes of the past. The effect is extraordinary! Continuing through an archway beneath the house, you enter the beautiful garden overlooking the countryside, featuring several shaded areas under pergolas with colorful clusters of wisteria, various relaxation nooks with built-in sofas and cushions, and a dining table for romantic al fresco dinners. Just a few dozen meters from the house, in a secluded area, you’ll find the pool with a spacious, fully equipped sun deck and a small oak grove that surrounds it, enclosing the area and providing a delightful spot of shade and coolness—a priceless respite on hot summer days.
Furnished with antique family heirlooms, the house is spread over two floors: the first floor and the first floor. The first floor includes a spacious dining room with an open kitchen and a fireplace, an entryway, a living room, 1 single bedroom, 2 double bedrooms, and 1 twin bedroom. Each bedroom has its own bathroom with a shower. The entrance to the bedrooms is shaded by lilac wisteria pergolas, creating a romantic and lighthearted atmosphere. On the first floor, however, is the master bedroom with a bathroom featuring a bathtub and a private terrace, characterized by splendid, expansive star-vaulted ceilings that lend it character and elegance. All rooms are independent—not connected internally but accessible exclusively from the garden—thus ensuring privacy and autonomy for each space. In particular, the single bedroom is detached from all the other ground-floor rooms.
More than 20 meters from the main building stands the guesthouse, a very charming and intimate structure. In August, it is usually occupied by the owners, while during the other months of the year it can be rented out and/or incorporated into the main building.
The farmhouse is secluded, offering complete tranquility, yet a small village (Spongano) is just 2 km away, reachable even by bicycle along a picturesque country road. There is also a shopping center nearby that is usually open on Sundays, convenient for weekend arrivals and departures. A 15-minute drive away, however, lies the nearest marina, the seaside village of Castro with its harbor and picturesque old town featuring a castle, where the largest classical-era statue of Athena, the Greek goddess, ever discovered was recently unearthed.
We love it because:
- The farmhouse garden captures the scents and colors typical of the Salento countryside with its prickly pears, oak grove, citrus grove, and herb beds.
- The bedrooms and common areas are very spacious and well-laid-out, offering ample and comfortable space for large groups or multiple families.
