Honest review: great place with disturbing client care issues
I have some deep concerns about the person/people renting this beach house, and I admit to being quite angry with him/them at the start of this rental procedure. But I also believe that honest and balanced reviews are the most helpful for people on both sides, so that is my intention. Read the "what didn't you like" section for more.
Location: absolutely fabulous. Casa Playa is as close to the ocean as you can get in this part of town. The ocean view offers gorgeous sunsets. There are some stairs down to the beach, but I wasn’t comfortable taking them as there was no handrail and I’m a little older. We opted to leave the gated community and go to the Oxxo next door, where there are cement steps and two ramps down to the beach. The March water was on the cooler side, but walking along the water’s edge in the sunshine was beautiful and so relaxing. The gated community was fairly quiet and everyone was friendly. Gardens were well taken care of. I especially liked the security guard who graciously waited for us and let us in when we arrived late in the evening. The community is conveniently located, minutes from local shops and big box stores. All the streets around were paved, which is a nice plus in Mexico.
The beach house: is a renovated mobile home with an addition that has been plastered and/or cemented over. There was a nice patio out front with a surrounding wall about 3’ tall. (Your dog will jump it if it wants to.) I spent quite a few happy hours out there in the sunshine. There were 2 space heaters provided for the chilly mornings, so we used those. The bedrooms both had a/c, but we didn’t need them. The beds were reasonably comfortable if you like a firm bed. All in all, a great location, with the issues listed in the next section below.
1. The oven has a gas leak that you can really smell. I had to turn off the oven, open the windows and leave for an hour or so. 2. Killer cabinets. If you bend even slightly over while washing dishes, you will crack your head on the metal handles which stick out an inch or so from the cabinet facing. Both my husband (6’) and myself (5’8”) whacked our heads several times that week, and it hurt! 3. You will wait a long, long time for hot water to wash dishes with. 4. The shower was super frustrating! There was cold water, and there was hot water (which you will wait for), but never warm water. Good luck.
The bigger issue: We weren’t 100% sure we could make it in March, and whether a friend would be able to come with us, so I chose a place that offered free cancellation up until (I thought) Feb 25th. Around the 20th, we found out we had to move our vacation to April. I checked, and this place was available for our dates and we were able to stay a few extra days, too. But the landlord ignored the request completely. Then booking.com got involved, but the landlord wouldn’t agree to the change. So we were going to lose almost $2500 Cdn if we couldn’t show up in March. No help via phone or email. The landlord obviously did not care about helping us out; they would keep our money and rent it to someone else if they could. Turns out my cancellation date was actually the Feb 19th, so the landlord had the right to cancel without refunding. However, if you’re going to be in hospitality, then you really need to care about the people who want to rent your place. In our business, we help make our clients happy, and that means caring more about them than the contract details sometimes. This person/people only cared about the money. They ignored our request, refused to help us out, and caused a much more stressful experience for us. Contracts and money should never be the driving factor in the hospitality industry. Ethics, trust and customers matter, too.
