Nestled within the Lake San Domenico and Lake Pio Nature Reserve and situated at the gateway to the Abruzzo, Lazio, and Molise National Park, Villalago is a true sanctuary of nature. You can admire the Abruzzo mountains through the extensive network of trails in the Upper Sagittario Valley, reaching peaks over 2,000 meters high such as Terratta and Argatone, which was also mentioned by the great Abruzzo poet Gabriele D’Annunzio in "La fiaccola sotto il moggio." Villalago is also known as “the village among the lakes.” At the foot of the village lies Lake San Domenico, a true gem set in the Sagittario Valley, and Lake Pio, a small body of water where you’ll easily come across the local wildlife—just be careful not to disturb them and keep a safe distance! Shared with Scanno, Lake Scanno lies halfway between these two magnificent towns; it’s famous for its heart-shaped outline, visible from the overlook accessible via the “Sentiero del Cuore” (Path of the Heart).
