Louis Braille was a French teacher of the blind, a pioneer in the care of the blind, and the inventor of the braille system for the blind—named after him—or simply “Braille.” The streets are characterized by stately mansions and historic buildings. Parkstraße 1 is a typical residential building in a closed-block development, situated on a corner lot, featuring a front garden dating from the 19th century (1904) and high ceilings. The building is a listed historic structure and is significant in terms of architectural history and urban planning. The corner is framed by open balconies that wrap around the corner. The stairwell contains remnants of colorful stained-glass windows and floor tiles. The Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences across the street and the park grounds are also impressive.


The small Peace Park invites you to linger. It is a small park featuring a boulder from the former Berzdorf lignite mine and the Jakob Böhme monument. The city park, the 15th meridian marker, the city hall, and the Neisse River are also within walking distance. The quiet zone at the edge of the park is particularly relaxing; sitting on benches among white trellises and planters, you can comfortably gaze out at the former border station.
