I will call a police, leave my apartment Story
Location, Size.
TL;DR: The apartment had a very strong bathroom odor that made it unsuitable to stay in. The owner refused to resolve the issue, made discriminatory comments about my nationality, and told me to leave. I had to book another hotel the same evening.
Details:
The apartment was simply not ready to live in. The bathroom ventilation was either not working or badly designed, which resulted in a very strong odor of mold, dampness, stagnant water, or something that had been wet for a long time.
I asked the owner whether we could either agree on a lower price or whether the issue could be fixed that same day. After a 6-hour flight, the last thing I wanted was to stay in an apartment where the bathroom smelled like that.
Instead of trying to solve the problem, the owner told me that if I didn't like the apartment, I could leave. Finding another place late in the evening in a city I had just arrived in was hardly a realistic option. I asked whether they could help me relocate since the issue was with the apartment, not with me.
The WhatsApp conversation quickly turned into an argument. I said I would contact Booking.com for help. The owner's response was, "I will call the police because you are in my apartment."
While I was still trying to find another place to stay, a plumber arrived. He smelled very strongly of tobacco, and after he left, the bathroom smelled of both the original odor and tobacco smoke. He checked the plumbing and confirmed everything was working correctly. During his phone call with the owner, he said he could smell chlorine in the bathroom. However, after ending the call, he told me privately that the real cause might be the ventilation system allowing air from the shared ventilation shaft to flow back into the apartment because there was no backdraft valve. I was surprised that he did not mention this possible explanation to the owner.
