Its coastline is part of the “Ugento Coast Regional Nature Park,” a regional nature reserve featuring vast beaches with fine white sand.
The park is characterized by a variety of natural habitats. The initial stretch consists of a sandy coastline with significant dunes; there are also the marshlands that once characterized the entire Salento region, followed immediately by the Serre di Ugento—hills composed of limestone rock crisscrossed by karstic channels. Because there are various habitats with different characteristics, the plants growing in this area include numerous species. Many plants—about 3%—are endemic, meaning they are unique to this region. Among the flowers, wild orchids stand out; they are small in size with very tiny, brightly colored blooms. In the sea, there are Posidonia seagrass meadows; this aquatic plant is very important because it is very similar to terrestrial plants and thus oxygenates the water. Among the animals, birds are numerous; herons, cormorants, and hoopoes are easily spotted. Mammals are very shy and are mainly active at night; among them, you may spot foxes, badgers, martens, and weasels.
The beaches are characterized by fine, white sand and feature numerous beach clubs. The seabed is generally shallow, making it ideal for families with children.
On the beach at Torre San Giovanni, where the ancient port of Ugento once stood, its remains dating back to the 4th century B.C. are still visible. Marina di Ugento, on the other hand, is surrounded by a lush pine forest that stretches down to the sea; a little further south lies Fontanelle Beach, characterized by a beautiful dune system and numerous beach resorts.
