Grado is one of the most sought-after tourist destinations in Friuli.
The territory of the municipality of Grado stretches between the lagoon of the same name, the mouth of the Isonzo River, and the Adriatic Sea. The municipal seat is located on Isola Maggiore and is divided into numerous areas and districts: Gravo Vecchia (the ancient city enclosed within the perimeter of the Roman castrum), Borgo de fora, Isola della Schiusa, Colmata, Centro, Squero, Città Giardino, Valle Goppion—formerly Valle Cavarera, Grado Pineta, and Primero.
The lagoon comprises about 30 islands and covers an area of approximately 90 square kilometers. In addition to the main island, the islands of Schiusa—connected to Grado by two bridges—and Barbana are also permanently inhabited.
