NEIGHBORHOOD DESCRIPTION The Oltrarno is characterized by narrow cobblestone streets, artisan shops, bars, cafés, traditional Tuscan restaurants, grocery stores, souvenir shops, and museums.
The apartment is located in the historic Oltrarno neighborhood, which means “beyond the Arno,” and this area stretches along the south bank of the river. The Oltrarno embodies the true essence of Florence: a quiet, green area that is therefore more relaxing than others.
This area is also known as the artisan district, famous for its charming boutiques, small shops, and artisans’ studios (particularly antique dealers and leatherworkers): Via Maggio is the heart of Florence’s antique scene.
Once a rural center, over the centuries the Oltrarno became a chic neighborhood where many aristocrats built their palaces and villas. The largest of these is undoubtedly Palazzo Pitti, formerly the residence of the Grand Dukes of Tuscany. Today, Palazzo Pitti houses numerous exhibitions and museums, among the most important in the city. Within its grounds lies the enchanting Boboli Gardens, an open-air museum of sculptures, some dating as far back as the 16th and 17th centuries.
Other major attractions in the Oltrarno district include the Brancacci Chapel with its magnificent frescoes by Masaccio, Masolino, and Filippino Lippi; Piazzale Michelangelo, with its breathtaking view of Florence; the magnificent church of San Miniato (one of the city’s highest points and the finest example of Romanesque art in Tuscany); and the Ponte Vecchio, home to countless jewelry stores and goldsmiths.
The Oltrarno is also famous for the market in Piazza Santo Spirito (held every morning), its cafés and wine bars (Olio & Convivium, Bene Vobis, Caffè degli Artigiani…), and the trattorias serving Tuscan cuisine (Santo Bevitore, I 4 Leoni, Osteria del Cinghiale Bianco, Il Magazzino…), and for those who want to enjoy a delicious pizza, just a few meters from the house is the famous Pizzium pizzeria.
Those who choose to stay in this area will find a wide range of grocery stores, pastry shops, bakeries, and much more, as well as convenience stores open late into the night.
