About this apartment rental
A visit to the city of Lecce.
Visit Piazza S. Oronzo, bustling with cafes, restaurants, and shops; the Roman Amphitheater; and the Castle of Charles V to admire its spaces and exhibitions. Lose yourself in the narrow alleys (Giravolte) and let yourself be surprised by the Basilica of S. Croce: a masterpiece of Lecce Baroque. The façade celebrates Christianity with its large rose window surrounded by a garland that conceals the faces of the temple’s architects (try to spot them). Conclude your tour in the spiritual heart of the city: Piazza Duomo. Lecce stone—a warm, golden-hued stone that is easy to carve—unites the many places of worship and noble palaces. Try a “rustico” (puff pastry with mozzarella, béchamel sauce, and tomato), a “pasticciotto” (shortcrust pastry with custard), and a “puccia” (a stuffed bread roll).
Discover Salento.
Salento never ceases to amaze. Driving aimlessly through endless olive groves, you’ll come across fortified hamlets, villages with noble palaces, churches adorned with frescoes, and mysterious Byzantine crypts.
Treat yourself to a swim at the Alimini Lakes, then visit the Cathedral, the Church of St. Peter, and the Aragonese Castle in Otranto. Head toward the coves of Porto Badisco and S. Cesarea Terme, then on to Castro and the Zinzulusa Cave. The next stop is Santa Maria di Leuca, the tip of Italy’s “heel.” Along the Ionian coast, don’t miss Gallipoli (the “beautiful city”) and Porto Cesareo with its splendid beaches.
Discover the inland villages: the Abbey of Santa Maria di Cerrate, then Nardò and Galatina with the frescoed interiors of the Basilica of Saint Catherine.
