We had a Sakurajima-side twin room at the Daiwa Roynet Kagoshima Tenmonkan Premier Hotel and we were very pleased with this room. It was lovely to be able to look at the erupting volcano from our window. We were on the 13th floor, so the view was very good. The Tenmonkan location was excellent, being on a tram line and also with bus stops close by for the City View Loop Bus. A bonus for this bus is that there are stops near the hotel for both the outward loop (from the Kagoshima-Chuo Station) and the return trip to the station. We arrived in Kagoshima by train and got a taxi to the hotel, which was about 1200 yen. The Airliner Bus to Kagoshima Airport (we left Kagoshima by plane) starts from a stop opposite the hotel (on the other side of the road) and this is convenient too. We think the bus started here from "empty" but when it later went past Kagoshima-Chuo Station, it picked up more passengers and filled up. It takes about 55 minutes to get to the airport. There was a department store, about 8 minutes walk away from the hotel, called Maruya Gardens, which was excellent for food shopping in the basement (down an escalator). The beds were very comfortable, it was good to have club chairs and a table near the window, the small fridge was good, and there was a wardrobe with folding doors for clothes. The room was a good size if you had large luggage and there was space under the bench below the TV to put closed suitcases. The bathroom was spacious and divided into a room with washbasin and toilet, and a separate shower/bath room with door off this. Our room was very quiet for our 5 night stay. The window could be opened a short distance, but we only discovered this later.
The room didn't have bedside tables and lamps, which we are used to having. Also, whilst there were coin-operated washing machines, they were busy all the time we tried to use them. The machines are of the "combined washer-dryer type", so when someone puts a normal load in, it takes about 2 hours to finish. There are just 3 machines for a very large number of rooms. However, we did manage to get our washing done. Sometimes the coin container seems to fill up and you need to use an IC card (or lots of other cards) instead.

Everything. This was by far the best hotel I stayed at in Japan.

The hotel has a very central location, within walking distance of the shopping area and the ferry terminal for ferries to Sakurajima, the aquarium, and other attractions. Sengan-en is just a short taxi ride away. The breakfast was as expected at Japanese hotels, but it does not meet the expectations of Scandinavian tourists. It is a mystery why Japanese hotels seem to serve scrambled eggs that resemble soup and bacon that appears to have been boiled. Great views from the breakfast room.
I did not like that the hotel expected guests to hang a sign on the door before 10:00 a.m. if they wanted the room cleaned and the rubbish removed. This information is written in very small print on the magnetic sign. I put the sign up when I left the room a few minutes after 10:00, after breakfast. When I returned, the room had not been cleaned and the rubbish bins were still full. When I raised this with reception, there was no apparent understanding, and I got the impression that because I had been too late, the same thing would happen the following day as well. However, the room was eventually cleaned, and when we returned in the afternoon, it was spotless. Nevertheless, the level of service from the staff did not meet the standard I have come to expect in Japan.
