The Ancient Mill of Sant'Angelo in Cortona is an ancient building dating back to the year 1000, built by the monks of that time to harness the power of the nearby stream to turn the gears of the millstones used to grind wheat and produce flour; It was the most advanced feat of mechanical engineering for its time, and it was certainly operated by the monks for many centuries. We have found no documentary evidence of its use as a mill, and it was only during the renovation work that we realized what had been hidden beneath ground level. Consequently, the house now reflects externally the purpose for which it was originally built, while internally, the rooms have been designed to meet today’s living standards. The house is 180 square meters. On the first floor, there are two living areas: one is located at the front and consists of a glass-enclosed room with a dining table (equipped with air conditioning and heating) and a sofa; here it feels as though you’re living in the midst of nature, and under the open sky you can enjoy pleasant moments at the table. Moving further inside, we find ourselves in the living area, with the kitchen on the left and a living room area on the right featuring sofas and a TV corner. In the center of the house is the staircase leading to the upper floor and the hallway leading to the rear of the first floor, where there are two double bedrooms and two bathrooms with showers. On the upper floor, there are two double bedrooms—one of which has a small terrace with a staircase providing direct access to the pool—and a small bedroom with a single bed. Also on the upper floor is a guest bathroom without a shower.
Outside the house is a 500-square-meter garden and a 5,000-square-meter olive grove; on the side of the house is the old mill’s water reservoir, which has been converted into a swimming pool; it is built entirely from the original stone and retains the appearance of the reservoir created many years ago. In the garden, there is a BBQ area with an outdoor sink and an electric cooktop, as well as a hot-water shower.
