Fantastic location in the historic center of Takayama. The accommodation is very spacious, comfortable, and clean.
The bathroom was very cold. The check-in experience could be improved—the host forgot to send us the code for the lockbox containing the key, so we had to wait outside for about 20 minutes. That said, the owner arrived after we messaged him, handed us the keys, and was very apologetic.

Loved the space, it was in a quieter part of town. Very spacious. Perfect for groups
Maybe the upstairs bedroom had a slight doggy smell. But it was fine. The stairs are very narrow and steep.

Sakuramaru is beautiful and spacious, and is walkable to so much good stuff to do: shopping, food, museums. And Sakuramaru can accommodate a good sized group and its super quiet. Perfect!

The house is well-equipped, very clean, and smells good.
It’s quite spacious for Japan, and the photos accurately show what you get.
The location is great in the old town - you can walk to the city center, and the neighborhood felt safe.
It could easily get a score of 10, but it’s only a 5 because of the 4 reasons below.
1. The owner was never available: not by phone, WhatsApp, email, or even through Booking. We couldn’t find the entrance, and no one answered. We didn’t feel safe because the door locks without a key, and there was no one to contact. We needed medical help and guidance, and there was simply no one to talk to. When visiting a foreign country, this is extremely important, and we felt helpless. Luckily, we booked it for only one night. The place itself is very nice, but without proper management, it’s worthless.
2. There are no closets or storage spaces for your belongings: be prepared to keep your suitcases all over the floor.
3. One room in the house is locked, and we heard footsteps from inside - It’s unclear whether someone else shares the apartment, which made us feel unsafe.
4. Most importantly: the house cannot be locked properly. There’s only a simple bathroom-style lock, and it would be easy to break in since the door is traditional and very old. Japan may be a safe country, but spending the night in a house that doesn’t feel secure, especially with children, really took away from the experience.
