I booked Old School Lodge because I wanted to hike Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and the hotel prices in Gunnison and Montrose seemed excessive for lower grade accommodations which are not that comfortable and provide limited amenities. I found Old School Lodge through my search for accommodations and I didn’t have high expectations, but WOW were we pleasantly surprised.
There is no formal check in or check out, you are granted a numeric access code to main entry door and a different code to your room door. The staff provided clear communication for property access leading up to our arrival. The rooms are huge compared to hotel rooms, the beds are very comfortable, and entire facility is immaculate. Old School also has a laundry in the building so you can pack light and wash your clothes, if you so choose.
As added bonuses, Old School Lodge is 35 minutes from BCNP and 10 minutes from groceries, gas, restaurants, etc. Our entire stay was great. I highly recommend this property.
Because the facility was an originally built for another purpose and converted into a hotel, or bed and breakfast, it doesn’t have facilities to cook food, and I do enjoy breakfast. Old School Lodge did provide packaged doughnuts, pastries, etc. in our room, which was unexpected and really cool.
I would stay here again.

This place is unique! The atroom was furnished with antique like furniture and it was huge. The common areas were beautifully decorated and the grounds were great as well. The location is quieter because this is on the outskirts of Montrose. Yet it is an easy drive to Montrose or Ouray.

Clean, comfortable bed
No one on site and it’s well outside of town on its own, so it feels a bit like an abandoned house you have access too. We seemed to be one of just two or three people staying there, so there were many unoccupied rooms, yet we were put in an accessible room with a very odd bathroom situation where the sink was not in the bathroom. Made it very difficult at night if you needed to use the toilet then have to find the sink and make noise in the dark. We’ve never stayed anywhere where it wasn’t made clear whether a room we be booked was accessible or not.
