A little home away from home in the heart of Joburg.
There is something beautiful about being somewhere that reminds you that hospitality is not just about a place to sleep, but about how a place makes you feel. Melville House understood the assignment.
From the moment I settled in, the experience was nothing short of splendid. The rooms were clean, the beds soft enough to cradle you into a much-needed rest, and the facilities were wonderful. But what made the stay truly special was the people. Gugu was incredibly helpful, attentive, and considerate, and the cleaning staff met every interaction with such kindness. Even the other guests added to the warmth of the experience, making the house feel welcoming and lived-in in the loveliest way.
And when Johannesburg Water decided to remind us that even the basics cannot always be taken for granted, the team at Melville House responded with grace and a solution-oriented spirit. Bottled drinking water and water to freshen up were provided, ensuring that guests were cared for despite the inconvenience. That kind of thoughtfulness matters. It is in the moments when things do not go according to plan that you learn the most about a place and the people who hold it together.
I left with a full heart, a rested body, and the kind of gratitude that makes you want to tell everyone you know about a good thing. Melville House gave me more than a comfortable stay; it gave me an experience rooted in care, kindness, and community.
I would return again and again, and I am already telling my friends to make themselves at home here, too.
Some places give you a room. Others give you a little reminder that the world can still be gentle.
Melville House did the latter.

The location is in good spot.
The room that we were in didn’t have a wardrobe for us to put our clothes and it was a bit too small.
