Hôtel Le Relais Dax

Good location for access to shops and food etc and staff let me in early do to heavy rain. It's a nice little hotel .

As with most towns now vehicles and people seem to be getting louder.

Very clean. Great price. Very friendly

No parking but the road outside was free.

Very clean, good parking place and not expensive. Good price quality ratio. Friendly lady. Flexibel with arriving time..

The wetter, it was unfortunate raining at arrival time.

Dax was a great disappointment and perhaps that is clouding my judgement of this property. I was southbound working my way from Paris to Irun to begin the Camino. I would have probably kept rolling down the track for Bayonne or Biarritz but a good friend told me of his experiences in Dax, 40 years ago, whilst picking grapes in the neighbouring countryside. Yes, I understand 40 years is a long time and having travelled a fair bit in Ireland, the UK and the Continent, it definitely had the feel of Butlins, Bournemouth or somewhere on the North Sea where prior generations went on holiday or "urlaub" before Ryanair allowed one to fly to Lanzarote or the Costa del Sol for less than the price of a tank of petrol. I mention Bournemouth and that's probably the closes approximation to Dax, a proud spa town now full of Boomers and Geriatrics (the two are not mutually exclusive) for their French NHS funded treatments! Anyway, I know that doesn't have anything to do with Hôtel Le Relais Dax, per se, but you generally find in such markets that well run properties begin to suffer because the revenues just don't justify improvements and worse, then, see the loss of amenities. The check-in hours were less than optimal and the place was nothing more than a bed as the dining room downstairs was closed and breakfast was not on offer. I paid a lot for a bed and there wasn't much around. Finding a "cafecito" at 630AM was hard. P.S. I note that the owner has called me a "dishonest person". I find that rather unfortunate as I do not believe my initial review maligned her property. 5 may have been a bit low but I did qualify my review with the statement that perhaps my experience of Dax, as a whole, left me overly critical of her establishment. FWIW, the Hotel Relais was clean and the bed was comfortable but I stand by what I said and I wish her well.
