What a magical beginning to my first trip to Sicily! What started as a pilgrimage of sorts, tracing the roots of my ancestry, became an experience far more special than I could ever have imagined. And at the heart of it all was A Alera Bed and Breakfast, a little gem on the beautiful island of Salina. I feel incredibly fortunate to have discovered this beautiful home away from home. From the moment I arrived, I was welcomed with a warmth that went far beyond hospitality. Giuliana and her wonderful team make you feel less like a guest and more like family.
Having grown up on Salina, Giuliana is a wealth of knowledge about the island and its people. Together with her family, she is passionate about preserving its authentic charm while helping it flourish as a destination in its own right. Her sister runs the local Trattoria, and her parents the Conad supermarket. As Giuliana says, “Just ask someone and they will guide you” — and it is absolutely true! There is a wonderful sense of community here that makes you feel instantly at home.
The accommodation is spacious, cosy and comfortable, with everything you could possibly need. And the breakfasts are a treat in themselves! An incredible assortment of fresh fruit, freshly baked local cakes, biscotti, pane and marmalades all made by Giuliana; as well as pancakes, eggs, bacon and options for every dietary need. And the coffee? Simply the best! Every detail reflects the genuine care and thoughtfulness that make staying here so special.
Just a stone's throw from the water, A Alera enjoys a truly captivating setting. A little beach lies nearby, while the views at sunrise, dusk and sunset are mesmerising. Watching Stromboli puff away on the horizon, almost at eye level, as speedboats and fishermen glide across the water, is an experience you won't forget in a hurry. It is the perfect place to slow down, reflect, recharge and simply be.

Whether you are seeking a weekend escape, a week of contemplation or a chance to immerse yourself in the beauty of the Aeolian Islands, you will find it here. My own journey was about discovering my ancestral roots. I left knowing I would return, this time with my family, to continue the journey and share this very special place with them.
But the most unforgettable moment came on my final day. About an hour into the ferry journey to the mainland, I suddenly realised I had left my medication in my room. Without it, I couldn’t continue the next month of my travels, and returning to Salina would mean disrupting my itinerary, losing prepaid accommodation and incurring considerable expense. I was in a complete panic when I messaged Giuliana, who immediately became the calm in my storm and quietly set about finding a solution. Then came the phone call that changed everything. I could hardly comprehend what she was telling me: Giuliana had mobilised her network of friends to find someone travelling to the port that afternoon who could bring my medication to me. Could I wait a couple of hours? Of course I could! When I finally met her friend Mario and his wife, I was almost in tears. Their willingness to help a stranger simply because Giuliana had asked was incredibly moving.
I will be eternally grateful to Giuliana for going above and beyond when I needed help most. Her extraordinary kindness and generosity turned a moment of panic into a lasting memory of genuine, selfless humanity.
A Alera is more than a beautiful place to stay. It is a reflection of Salina itself — authentic, welcoming and full of heart. If you are planning a visit to the Aeolian Islands, I cannot recommend it highly enough.
Some places take your breath away with their beauty; others touch your heart through the people you meet. A Alera and Giuliana gave me both.
I cannot wait to return.

Best views on the island! Even better than at certain luxury properties where we went for Aperitivo. Staff and owner were warm and welcoming and breakfast was the best of our 3.5 week trip around Sicily, featuring delicious local products and homemade cakes and pastries.
A bit of a walk up the hill to restaurants and bars or downhill to the beach (fine for us, but challenging if you have any physical limitations).

The property was really well located in beautiful Malfa, very close to beach and town centre. The team at A’Alera were very helpful with all our questions. We also loved the breakfasts and home baking whilst overlooking Stromboli.
