Probably one of the roughest-looking hostels I've stayed in. We booked the private double room. When we arrived, I had to put the sheet on the bed myself (the bedding was nice and clean). The room felt more like a prison cell. There are no windows, the walls were really dirty, and the table and bedside cabinet were sticky!
There aren't many toilets/showers (roughly 3–4 showers and maybe 5 toilets, off the top of my head). We often had to wait to use them as the backpackers was pretty full when we stayed. On the bright side, the toilets/showers were clean enough!
There are quite a few fines for not following the rules that we came across in the kitchen and our room. They take a $40 deposit, but nobody explained these extra fines to us. For example, not washing your dishes (which makes sense), using the kitchen between around 2:30 and 4 pm, or not putting the bedding back properly when checking out.
The rules themselves are understandable, but it would have been nice if someone had explained them to us rather than having to find out about all these fines ourselves. It creates a bit of a hostile atmosphere.
All things considered, it was OK.
