We stayed here as a couple in March 2025, when our Japanese friend strongly recommended we stayed here. This was the first hotel we booked on our return trip to Japan this September, bringing our 2 sons. Kyoto has the reputation of being overcrowded and hectic – however both times we have stayed here we have experienced a wonderful peaceful atmosphere at the hotel, yet it is not far from lots of famous sites: 19 minutes walk to Kiyumizudera Temple, with the sunset views; 8 minutes walk from the Kodaji Temple, with its bamboo forest; half an hour by tram to the gates at Fushimi Inari; so we can choose to go for a walk at a time of day when the paths and streets are less crowded! Further away we also visited Shisendo Temple – a quiet temple with a beautiful garden, complete with ancient bamboo deer scarer, as well as the more popular Kinkaku-ji and the Roaon-ji garden. As the hotel is part of the temple complex guests are invited to a service at 610am – there is a wake up alarm in each room a guest can choose to turn on if they wish to go to the service. The Daishoro (Great Bell Tower (1678) behind the temple contains one of the largest bells (Ogane, cast 1636) in Japan. The hotel restaurant is known for their Kyoto-style kaiseki cuisine – we always have breakfast and dinner in the restaurant. The quality of the food is exceptional. I have a mushroom allergy, and one son is pescatarian, and we always had delicious substitutions for relevant parts of the set meal. I especially appreciated Matsunaga’s care with my mushroom allergy at breakfast - all the staff are very kind and helpful. Each time we have stayed for 4 nights in Kyoto – and still feel there are so many lovely places to visit. We hope to return to the Chion-in Wajun Kaikan before too long! The hotel has a variety of rooms – Japanese style with futons, Western Style with beds table and chairs, and a mixed style – beds but low table and seats on the floor. It has 2 large onsens in the basement.
It does not have a laundry room for guests, so one has to walk about 10 minutes to a nearby coin operated launderette. We have gone to: “Sentakukan Higashiyamasanjoten” address: Minamikinomotocho, Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto, 605-0015, Japan (near Fresco Petit Higashiyama Sanjo shop.)

I truy loved everything about the place - especially as it was within the Chion-in Temple area and was very close to the other temples. Service was excellent and the experience of starting the day with meditation was amazing.
Nothing.

The location is fantastic, just a stone's throw from the historic Gion district and also right next to a park and Buddhist temple. For a hotel in Japan, the rooms are enormous and very well priced. The Japanese style buffet breakfast was awseome and very reasonably priced. If you are down for an early start, the option for a wakeup call to attend morning Buddhist prayer service makes for a great experience.
The beds were a little bit hard for my liking but I have seen much worse, and the pillows were a bit thin for me.

I experienced a full Japanese experiments during my stay there which what I was aiming for. The location, I could not ask for a better spot than this hotel.
Nothing
