Guesthouse Kamikoya ゲストハウス かみこや

We picked Guesthouse Kamikoya sort of randomly, just for its location near the Tengu Highlands and some other spots we wanted to see on our road trip through Shikoku. We had no idea the owners were master artisans of traditional "washi" paper making, and especially not that the master was actually a Dutch immigrant who came to Japan 45-ish years ago! My wife LOVED the washi wallpaper, the rustic yet clean architecture, the tranquil setting, the sweeping mountain vistas, and also the peace and quiet of the location deep in the countryside. At night, we were able to open all the windows and let in the cool mountain breeze and listen to a chattering brook somewhere nearby. The room is actually the 2nd floor of the washi workshop / office, so in the evening, we had the entire place to ourselves. The owners locked up the workshop so basically we were in the second story of an otherwise empty building in the country. Our room had 2 tatami rooms (one set up as a living room, one set up as the bedroom with futons), a bathroom with a nice big tub, a toilet room, and a washroom. Downstairs, we also had a big glassed-in patio with screen doors, a huge dining table, some cooking facilities etc and a fridge for drinks and stuff. We want to go back and do the paper making course offered there, as well as bring stuff for a BBQ (the table actually has built-in barbecue pits). I think it'd be fun to come with a small group and have a little party in the patio. It's as safe and tranquil a location as anywhere we've stayed in Japan, with the added benefit of it being an artisan washi paper workshop and being an 'entire house' rental.

No critical things to say about this property. It was sweet.

Guesthouse Kamikoya was our favourite accommodation in Shikoku. The people were wonderful, the room great, the view fantastic. Yusuhara up the road is fascinating.

This was a beautiful house with an amazing outdoor area. We did the paper class the next day which was an AMAZING experience!
