Perfect place in Las Lajas to relax and enjoy the beach and the restaurant.
At the end of a short gravel road, the Pony Ranchero is the last resort on the Las Lajas beach. Not hindered by neighboring resorts it allows long walks in either direction on the wide empty beach, with beautiful views. A well-maintained wooden pier on the rear side of the resort brings you via a small mangrove/rainforest section to the river where you can spot birds and, if you're lucky, an occasional croc.
We stayed one night when we came from the Panama City/Gamboa/Valle Anton direction, and enjoyed it so much we booked another two nights on our way from Bocas del Toro to Santa Catalina.
The resort has its own beachfront, with chairs and even a quirky workout area.
The Las Lajas waves may not be as challenging as those near Santa Catalina, but high enough to enjoy multiple fast rides on the surf board (available at the resort). We reserved a board for our 17-year old son but, well into our 50's and 60's, enjoyed our first-ever thrilling surf rides just as much.
The pool is between the apartments and the restaurant, so we could enjoy happy hour in the pool.
The restaurant deserves a special note and photos. The food is delicious and even the breakfast (my choice was Mexican style) was served by the chef as a work of art. The pina-colada's were the best (also biggest, and affordable) we had on our 20-day Panama exploration trip.
Needless to say we will continue to stop at the Pony Resort whenever we visit Panama.
A touristic suggestion: if you drive from Las Lajas to/from the Santa Catalina / Coiba direction, make sure to take the very scenic highway nr. 5 to Sona. For whatever reason this quiet and beautiful road is not suggested by Maps, despite the fact that it takes only few minutes more than via the busy Panamarican highway. It also has a nice coffee-stop/diner along the way on a river.

In reality, this property is even more beautiful than it looks in the photos on Booking. We spent a few days here and really enjoyed our time at the hotel. It offers a great balance of privacy and a lively, welcoming atmosphere.
The rooms were very comfortable, and having direct access to our own parking space was a big plus. The staff were genuinely friendly, and watching the sunrises in the morning was a wonderful experience. It was a thoroughly enjoyable stay, and we would happily recommend it.
