Our two-night stay at Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge was one of the highlights of our journey through Tanzania. Its location on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater is truly exceptional, offering magnificent panoramic views and an atmosphere that makes the stay feel very special.
The lodge’s distinctive architecture blends beautifully with the natural surroundings, and our room was comfortable, peaceful, and well positioned to enjoy the remarkable scenery. The common areas were warm and inviting, particularly in the evening after returning from the crater.
The staff were welcoming, professional, and attentive throughout our stay. The meals were enjoyable and offered a good variety, while the overall service was well organized.
The lodge felt considerably overpriced for the overall standard and services provided. The road to and from the lodge was extremely rough and uncomfortable. I was also surprised that, despite our stay being on a full-board basis, I was asked to pay extra for a simple espresso at breakfast. Considering the already high room rate, this policy felt unreasonable and disappointing.

The location, great view of the crater, some friendly staff and F& B manager
While the lodge had a great design and an amazing view, the rooms were very small and basic, old, felt very cramped; The beds were clean and comfy though; for the amount they charge, you expect at least a bathrobe and some comfort.
Food quality was not good at all, nothing like we experienced in a lot of other places in Tanzania. It should be a full buffet for 200 plus guests. Not worth the price at all $ 1200 a night for such a tiny room; it's excessive for these conditions, but I guess you pay for the location.
They mostly cater to mass tourism, and it shows.

The view
The food is cheap, they charge extra for water (2 glasses of cheap wine and a bottle of water 18$) and alcohol. The room was full of ants and other flying insects. We changed rooms cause they were all over biting us. And this happened after we went for dinner and someone actually went to the room and prepared the room for the night. That means they didn’t check the room at all. When we left they asked me about our stay and the manager was shocked, he didn’t even knew about the incident. Not worth to pay this money ever for this hotel. In Africa try small hotels and camps please. People are amazing and food is top. They take so much care of you. In the big hotels we had bad experience everywhere. I wouldn’t pay more than £200 a night here ever. My room was at then end £1050 for 2 nights from £975. Exchange rate I think so. For me everything was overpriced in Africa. Is still Africa not London where I live. In Dubai for £500 a night you get a 5 star hotel with a nice view and top food and amazing service. Thank you!
