We loved our room Douglas Fairbank, beautiful quite location with a garden and a very partial lake view. Such friendly staff on reception and very pleasant in the restaurant - service was good. Room was beautifully decorated. The restaurant was beautiful with a castle view. We even managed a ride on the black Swan ferry, also loved our included entry to the castle.
We were not very impressed with quality if the food. Dinner was overpriced and the lamb burger was very dry and overcooked, as was the full English breakfast the next morning.

We actually upgraded to The Maidens' Tower, on the island immediately adjacent to the Castle, which was exceptional. Being able to look out at the floodlit castle at night and wander around after members of the public were excluded was magical and good photographically, of course. The bedroom and ensuite were superb and luxurious, with a massive bath which I used in the evening and a big shower in the morning. I assume the Tower's five bedrooms are somewhere that wedding parties would use. A real experience to be there just for one night. Oh for unlimited funds to stay for much longer!
I loved the shower but without any screen from the rest of the bathroom, it was impossible not to wet the floor significantly, even as far as the wc. But it was a minor problem, certainly.

The Castle and grounds are fabulous and so beautiful; thank goodness for the late Lady Baillie and the amazing team who continue to care for it all.. There is so much to do and see. The maze was excellent and the gentleman on the top to save anyone from becoming lost was so informative and friendly. We visited on the 9th October. The staff were all polite, the security staff knowledgeable, and in general everyone was very helpful. The restaurant food was very good.
I booked a Deluxe Stable courtyard room for a birthday treat for a couple of days which the hotel was aware of. We were put in a room at the back of the courtyard with a view over the staff working car park and the garden but there was a path running past the windows which many people used so we were unable to open the net curtains. The bed was very hard and the pillows harder. The wardrobe did not have a high enough rail to hang a midi-length dress. There was no long mirror. Nowhere to hang wet coats. A huge bathroom but nowhere to put your wash bag apart from the windowsill. The staircase to the upper floor went past our door, our bed was just inside the door, so it was noisy with footsteps and chatter. Outside we had to walk under a security chain or open it to access the main part of the castle courtyard to go to the restaurant, etc. We certainly did not feel we were staying somewhere special. Be very careful which room you book; ask where it is. Everywhere else we went, there were rooms that were in much better locations; even the two above us had a better outlook. So that was disappointing. In the restaurant, everyone is placed at tables quite close together even when it is half empty. Placing people next to the window to see the castle is great, but when it is dark, it doesn't matter, as the lights of the restaurant reflect in the glass so you can't see much. Food lovely, service friendly and efficient.
