Jozankei View Hotel is an oldie but goldie. It has 2 connected bldgs (old and new). We stayed in the old one facing the river which offered great views. I was pleasantly surprised by the indoor water park which though old was well maintained and clean. The slides were steep and fun. There's even a wave pool and thrilling curving slide you ride with a double floatee. The onsen is really large and has both indoor and outdoors areas (big plus given the autumn foliage). The buffet breakfast was amazing - great spread (Japanese and Western) and good quality. It is centrally located and you can walk from there to the Futami suspension bridge and tourist area as well as fantastic restaurants. There's plentiful sheltered and open-air parking too!
For that price of USD175 per night for the 2 of us, there is nothing not to like. It was clean and for all of the above reasons, became a highlight of the trip for us.

Great, lovely, retro, chic, service was very friendly and lovely, staff made the whole experience worth it. I’ve stayed at 5 stars hotels all over the world way worse than this one.
