The building was superb , amazing decor and nice rooms , staff were very helpful and friendly .
Because of the price I expected much more , we had paid for a room with a sea view , we were given a room on the 1st with a giant palm tree blocking the entire view . The lady on the desk did change it for us on request to a 2nd floor room but we shouldn't have had to ask . The floor was a little sandy but the room was otherwise clean . We run a small boutique guesthouse in Spain at less than a quarter of the price of this one . We provide free tea , coffees and drinking water for the duration of the stay . This 5 star hotel where we were paying over 400 euro a night did not provide free drinking water , and did not replenish the initial tea/ coffee sachets throughout the week that we were there . No one explained that The four poster sun beds in the garden were allocated to specific rooms . It was embarrassing to be asked to get off them although the staff member was very polite . I have stayed in four star hotels frequently in Playa del Ingles and for us the price of Riu Palace was not justified .

The location is magical and the hotel has a certain wow factor from the outside, especially at night. The gardens and pools are great. But what most impressed us was the genuine niceness and warmth of all the staff from reception desk to pool services. They were super nice to us and it was cute to see them also being so nice with other guests who probably stayed longer (kisses on the cheeks and holding hands - in a family way). I wondered what RIUs secret recipe for this is.
In our end thirties we were some of the youngest guests around. Most of the guests were German, Swiss and British upper middle class 50-80 years old - which was totally fine.
I mention this because the main buffet - for us - was rather mediocre, but I guess the target group is the mentioned above and caters to their wishes/fantasies. Also breakfast / lunch felt a bit mass touristy, which RIU as a brand does.
Also the building is beautiful from the outside and rooms are modern and clean, but some taste level is missing, especially with the strange art works in the hallways. Also the elevator areas look like an 80s/90s office building.
Despite these minor remarks, it was a very nice stay! It’s just not a „classic“ 5 star hotel. The high price point you pay is for the location.
Nevertheless: If we come back to Gran Canaria, we will probably stay here again :-)
