Be wary of booking. Panoramic views became claustrophobic brick walls

The property we stayed did not in any way match our expectations when we made our initial booking.

Our location was changed at the last minute at the request of the owner, who then reneged on terms that were offered to encourage our acceptance of this change.

No hot water ruined our stay

The best thing was the proximity to York city centre. Shops, restaurants and attractions were a ten minute walk away.

A friend and I stayed in Merchants Place for the weekend. My friend is clinically vulnerable and arrived first. She immediately noticed that the apartment was none too clean (the floors were dirty and the windows very smeary). She felt compelled to wipe down the surfaces with antibacterial wipes for her own health and safety. She also found a used tissue on the floor. The pillows and mattresses looked old and worn. My friend is a morning shower person whereas I am an evening one. I went for a shower at 22:45 on the Friday night, only to find the water was stone cold. I didn't want to stand under a freezing cold shower, so I put gave myself the briefest of wipe downs with a flannel before jumping into bed, feeling shivery and chilled. Not the best start to our break in York. In the morning, my friend found that the water was still cold, so she couldn't shower either. I looked at the guest apartment folder, which said that hot water was provided using a water heater, which supposedly came on in the early morning and afternoon, but could be boosted at any other time using a boost button.. But it was obvious that it wasn't working at all, as there was no light on the control box and only cold water coming out of the taps. I contacted Be My Guest York via the app at 9am that morning, explaining the situation and asking for them to come back to me.. No-one did. In the afternoon I telephoned Be My Guest, reiterating what the problem was and expressing my disappointment that no-one had bothered to get back to me. The person I spoke to (Sally) told me that the water heater had recently been serviced and offered to show me the invoice (I declined). She agreed to call out an electrician, who arrived about an hour later. The electrician told us that despite what we'd been led to believe, the boost button did not work because it was overridden by the timer function.

“Excellent location, but disappointing comfort and cleanliness”

The location was excellent — very convenient for exploring York and easily the best aspect of the property.

Unfortunately, the apartment fell well below expectations. The biggest issue was the king-size bed, which was extremely uncomfortable. The mattress peaked in the middle, sloped down on both sides, and the springs could be felt poking through. A comfortable bed and a good night’s sleep are basic requirements, and this simply did not deliver. The bathroom had considerable mould in the shower, and the lighting was very poor, with lights constantly flickering and the room remaining extremely dark. Hot water lasted only around 10 minutes, which was completely inadequate for a two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment booked for three adults. The apartment also needed a thorough clean, with dusty, dated carpets and generally dusty surfaces. The air conditioning was ineffective during the warm weather. The excellent location was unfortunately outweighed by these significant comfort, cleanliness and maintenance issues.

Prompt and friendly service from the host. Linen and towels were of a great quality. Very good shower, plenty of room, the bathroom was also lovely but we didn't use the bath. Location was good very near Faregate.
